Share the lodge, but keep the snow to yourself

Our Private Trips let you enjoy the camaraderie and life-long friendships of a shared lodge experience, while ensuring that all the turns and fresh tracks are yours alone. You and your favourite ski buddies will have your very own guides and private helicopter, so you can get the most out of the mountains before heading back to swap stories at the lodge.

frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Private and Exclusive trips?

Private trips are a group of skiers staying in a lodge with other guests but skiing with their own helicopter and two guides.

An Exclusive trip is just for you and your group of 5-10 people and two guides, with the lodge and helicopter entirely to yourselves.

How fit do I need to be to Heli-Ski?

A typical CMH Heli-Skiing Guest is:

  • a strong intermediate to advanced skier/rider
  • able to ski/ride in control on most terrain and willing to try black diamond runs
  • comfortable in a variety of snow conditions
  • fit enough to ski/ride for consecutive days
  • someone who has skied/ridden actively at mountain resorts for a few seasons
What's the group size? What type of helicopters do you use?

Group sizes can range from 4-20 depending on the facility. The majority of our Private/Exclusive trips cater to 4-10 skiers. Our Bighorn and Valemount lodges can accommodate 10 skiing guests, and up to 10 non-skiing guests based on availability. For groups of 4 skiers and below, we use a Bell 407 (up to 4 skiers/2 guides). Groups with more than 4 skiers use a Bell 212 helicopter.

What's your most luxurious lodge/trip?

Our most luxurious lodge is Valemount, which Ski Magazine named one of the world’s “Five Most Luxe Ski Lodges.”

When it comes to our Private and Exclusive trips, if you’re looking for the ultimate terrain, then Bighorn or Nomads are just for you.

What's the easiest lodge to get to? Can I fly my own plane to the lodge?

Valemount is a quick and convenient 1 hour private flight from the Calgary International Airport (which is included in your trip cost).

Flying your own plane is also an option, as several of our lodges have private airstrips nearby. We also have an extensive number of transportation options to get you to the lodge faster; to learn more, visit our Transportation page.

What's included in my trip? What should I pack?

All of CMH’s Heli-Skiing trips include accommodation at one of our spectacular lodges, food and non-premium non-alcoholic beverages, certified guides and helicopter pilots, safety training and the use of specially designed Heli-Skis. Our What’s Included page will give you full details on everything that is included.

For our Private & Exclusive Heli-Skiing trips, we would recommend you pack the following:

  • Ski or snowboard boots
  • Snowboard, if required (NOTE: We do have some snowboards available to rent. Visit our What’s Included page to learn more
  • Snow pants and warm coat
  • Hard shell or one-piece suit
  • Goggles/mitts or gloves
  • Wool hat or toque
  • Multi-layer clothing for skiing
  • 3-4 pairs of comfortable, warm socks
  • Light workout clothes for morning stretch class
  • Bathing suit for hot tub or sauna
  • Indoor shoes or slippers
  • Casual clothing for in the lodge
  • Optional items: alarm clock, camera, binoculars, collapsible poles (for snowboarders), spare snowboard parts (as listed in the Snowboard Gear form you will receive when you book)

While we recommend helmets be worn on all Heli-Skiing trips, helmets are only mandatory for Steep Shots & Pillow Drops, and Steep Camp.
Do you supply Avalanche Flotation Devices (AFD airbags)?

We have a limited number of packs available to rent at each lodge each week. Read about our AFD rental program to find out more.

What are the qualifications of CMH guides/tail guides?

CMH is the largest single employer of mountain guides worldwide with over 120 professionals averaging more than 14 years of experience. Each guide has completed an 8-year certification process with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) or the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA).

What training and equipment will I get? Can I use my own transceiver?

Before our guests ski, they take part in a mandatory helicopter safety briefing and transceiver training. We will provide you with a trasceiver, radio, probe and shovel.

We recommend that all guests use our transceivers so we can ensure everyone is on the same system.

Do I have to sign a waiver?

Yes - every guest, including non-skiers, must complete a waiver form prior to their arrival. Visit our Booking Information page to complete your Heli-Skiing waiver.
